Vision Australia is the leading Australian provider of blindness and low vision services. Our Home Care Packages are ideal for people who have aged-related vision loss, or have low vision and are now facing additional challenges related to aging.
By bringing your Home Care Package to Vision Australia, you will receive specialised services to provide you with a tailored package catering to your specific blindness or low vision requirements.
Braille literacy is a vital skill for people who are blind or have low vision. Knowing how to read by touch ensures people have better access to information and an increased sense of independence around the house.
Vision Australia offers two braille training courses for adults, designed for people who learnt braille as a child and need a refresher, as well as for people who have never studied braille before. The purpose of the training, which is supported by both NDIS and My Aged Care funding, is to provide our clients with yet another tool to help them live the life they choose.
Norma's castle on King Island
For Norma, sudden vision loss first impacted her ability to climb the stairs at home. “You walk in from the sunlight and the top is full of light but the bottom is completely dark,” she says. “The first few times I just started walking and fell over. I thought, ‘Wow, how did I do that?’ I just didn’t see the stairs.”
But with professional help from Vision Australia’s team, Norma was soon comfortable in her own home. She was even brave enough to move to King Island, a remote part of Tasmania.
“My main concern was that I wouldn’t have the infrastructure and support that I had on mainland Australia. But I’ve learnt that when you explain you have a disability, people go out of their way to accommodate and support me,” Norma says.
“With professional help from Vision Australia’s team, I soon felt comfortable in my own home.”
